When the Body Speaks: A Holistic Counsellor’s Story on the Mind-Body Connection

The Soul Whispers, But the Body Roars

As a Holistic Counsellor on the Sunshine Coast, one of the core principles I work with is the mind-body connection. The body often holds wisdom long before the mind catches up. It whispers gently at first, but if we don’t listen, it eventually roars.

When I was 22, I tore the ligaments off the bone in my hip joint during a yoga class. You wouldn’t think yoga could cause such a destructive injury. But I don’t believe yoga was the problem—it was my attitude to it.

When Stillness Becomes Addiction

I’ve always had an all-or-nothing approach to life. At 20, yoga felt like a breath of fresh air. For the first time, I experienced what stillness felt like and what it meant for my mind to truly be quiet. I could observe my consciousness and find peace in my being.

But soon, yoga became like a drug. I pushed myself harder and harder—sometimes doing two hot yoga classes back-to-back. Until one day, my hip gave way. My body could no longer hold me. I had ignored the cues for too long, and now it was demanding I listen.

A Lesson That Returned Ten Years Later

Fast forward a decade, and the same injury symptoms “suddenly” returned. Yet, if I’m honest, I had felt the signs. I was overcommitted with work, had lost spaciousness, and was ignoring my need for deep rest and repair.

It wasn’t until a physiotherapy appointment that it clicked. I told him, “I feel like I have no time in my life, something has to give.”
And just like before—my hip had “given way.”

The Body as Messenger

This experience reminded me of something I now explore with my holistic counselling clients: the body always finds a way to communicate what the mind won’t acknowledge.

The body is a messenger of the subconscious and unconscious. It carries our unprocessed thoughts, emotions, and spiritual lessons. By the time symptoms show up physically, it’s time to really listen.

What Does Healing Look Like?

So what do we do when the body speaks? For me, healing looks like giving myself time, space, and grace. It means leaning in, listening deeply, and asking: What are you trying to show me?

Right now, the message is clear—I need to give more to myself.
Because when you’re in a role that requires you to hold space for others, you cannot sustain it if you don’t first fill your own cup.

As Master Shi Heng Yi once said:
When you’re healthy, you have hundreds of problems. When you’re sick, you only have one.

Holistic Counselling & The Mind-Body Connection

My work as a Holistic Counsellor in Sunshine Coast and online often involves guiding clients to explore these deeper connections. Together, we look at how the body reflects unspoken emotions, unresolved trauma, and unmet needs—so healing can happen on every level: mind, body, and soul.

If you’ve been experiencing physical symptoms that feel connected to stress, overwhelm, or emotional strain, holistic counselling may help you uncover the deeper message and create lasting healing.
