How Long Should You Be in Therapy? (And How to Know When It’s Time to Stop)
I look forward to breaking up with my clients.
Now, before you think… geez, does this woman hate her job?
Not at all.
What I really look forward to is the moment someone says,
“Rachel, I think I’m ready to take a break… I feel like I’ve got what I need.”
That’s the goal.
And it’s probably not what you’ve experienced before.
As a holistic counsellor on the Sunshine Coast, my intention isn’t to create long-term dependency.
It’s to support you into something much more valuable than that.
Self trust.
Stability and inner security.
A sense that you can meet life as it comes.
So… How Long Should You Be in Therapy?
This is one of the most common questions people have.
And the honest answer is… it depends.
Some people come for a short period to work through something specific.
Others stay longer as they unpack deeper layers over time.
But here’s the part that matters most:
Therapy isn’t meant to be something you rely on forever.
Not in a way where you feel like you need it just to cope.
The real intention of holistic counselling or somatic therapy is to help you build the internal capacity to hold yourself.
How Do You Know If Therapy Is Actually Working?
It’s not always obvious.
It’s not about feeling amazing all the time.
And it’s not about “fixing” everything.
Often, the signs are more subtle:
You feel a little more grounded in situations that used to overwhelm you
You notice your reactions, rather than being completely taken over by them
You’re able to sit with uncomfortable emotions for longer
You trust yourself more, even when things feel uncertain
If I’m doing my job well as a holistic therapist, you leave sessions feeling:
A little more capable.
A little more steady and secure within yourself.
A little more like… you’ve got this.
Why Holistic Therapy Works Differently
A lot of people come to holistic counselling on the Sunshine Coast after trying traditional talk therapy.
They’ve done the talking.
They understand their patterns.
And yet… something still isn’t shifting.
This is where a holistic therapist or somatic therapist works differently.
We’re not just working with your thoughts.
We’re working with your nervous system.
Your body.
Your emotional patterns.
Because change doesn’t just happen through insight.
It happens through feeling and integrating your emotions and life experiences with more acceptance and self compassion.
What Happens When the “Big Feelings” Come Up
Grief.
Shame.
Guilt.
The things that feel like too much.
This is often where people struggle the most…Because most of us were never taught how to be with these experiences.
So we avoid, run and distract ourselves with phones, food, alcohol, work, relationships…
whatever helps us not feel what’s actually there.
And to be honest these are effective strategies at coping with life’s challenges if we don’t have the resources and skills to actually process what’s underneath the surface.
This is where holistic counselling can be incredibly helpful and supportive.
What Therapy Is Actually Meant to Do
Therapy isn’t about getting rid of your emotions.
It’s about building the capacity to be with them… safely.
This is where somatic therapy and holistic therapy come in.
You’re not thrown into overwhelm.
There’s pacing, containment and support.
So you can go into those deeper emotional places…
without getting swallowed by them.
To know…
“I can feel this… and I’ll be okay.”
AND, that there is someone here with me, that I trust who can bring me back out of them.
When Is It Time to Stop Therapy?
You don’t need to be “perfect” or have it all figured out.
But you might be ready to step back when:
You trust yourself to navigate challenges as they arise
You feel more regulated and less overwhelmed by your emotions
You’re no longer relying on sessions to feel okay
You feel like you’ve integrated what you came to work on
Sometimes that’s for a month, a season, or sometimes longer.
And sometimes… people return later when life brings a new layer to explore.
That’s a healthy relationship with therapy.
You Might Recognise Yourself Here…
You’ve done therapy before, but still feel stuck in the same patterns
You’re self-aware, but something deeper isn’t shifting
You feel deeply, and sometimes get overwhelmed
You’re looking for a more holistic approach to therapy, not just talking
You’re searching for a holistic counsellor or somatic therapist on the Sunshine Coast
If this is you… you’re not alone.
